Organic bread is, in simplified terms, bread baked with organic ingredients. At least 95% of the finished weight of the bread (minus water and salt) must be composed of organic ingredients.
Organic ingredients are crops grown without the use of most conventional pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. These crops cannot be bioengineered or subjected to ionizing radiation. Upon inspection of the grower’s processes by a certifying agency, the crops can then be labeled organic. These certified organic crops then become the ingredients used in the organic bread.
The remaining 5% or less of the ingredients must appear on an approved list of naturally occurring ingredients established by the National Organic Program. These ingredients must also be non-GMO, not irradiated, nor fertilized with inappropriate sources (sewage sludge). The ingredients in Aunt Millie’s Hearth Organic Breads are USDA certified to meet these standards.
